The Hezbollah resistance movement has categorically dismissed allegations about its involvement in a deadly assault on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon, which killed a French soldier and wounded three others.
The group, in a statement issued on Saturday, denied any connection to the attack in al-Ghandouriyah area of the Bint Jbeil district, calling for patience until the Lebanese army's investigation into circumstances surrounding the incident is complete.
Hezbollah also stressed the need for continuation of cooperation among local population, UNIFIL and the Lebanese army.
It underlined the importance of collaboration between the peacekeeping force and Lebanese soldiers, particularly in light of the escalating situation in southern Lebanon.
"It comes as a complete surprise to Hezbollah that groundless allegations against the movement are made especially by parties which keep mum on the Zionist enemy's attacks on UNIFIL forces," the statement read.
French President Emmanuel Macron has blamed the attack on Hezbollah.
"France demands that the Lebanese authorities immediately arrest the perpetrators and take their responsibilities alongside UNIFIL," he said.
The deadly incident comes amid heightened tensions in southern Lebanon, where peacekeepers have faced growing risks since the Israeli military resumes its acts of aggression on March 2.
A 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon came into effect on April 16.
Since last week’s negotiations between Iranian and US delegations in Islamabad on an end to the US-Israeli aggression on Iran, Tehran has kept pushing for a ceasefire in Lebanon as a major condition for any progress in the talks and the start of the second round of negotiations.
The pressure from Iran finally forced the US and the Israeli regime to announce a ceasefire that took effect on Thursday night.
